Set in the lovely rolling foothills of the magnificent Canadian Rockies, Calgary achieved international attention when it hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. Originally an outpost of the North West Mounted Police, the city became a mecca for “Cattle Kings” who built mansions and sprawling ranches when the transcontinental railway reached town in 1883. Later, Calgary thrived as an oil boomtown. Although still one of Canada’s major oil centers with a population of 810,000 and a downtown sparkling with shiny skyscrapers, the city has managed to retain a small-town feeling. This eTrail is one complete vacation written with families in mind. It’s loaded with exciting things to do, family-friendly places to lodge and dine, recommended side trips, local sources of information, and detailed travel directions. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States.
