Rock Creek as a wandering little waterway making its shady way through the bustling urban center of the nation's capitol. Its gentle current meanders form Laytonsville, Maryland, before flowing into Washington's Rock Creek Park, through a tree-filled valley, past the National Zoo, and finally joining the Potomac River just a few blocks from the White House. Its cool waters have brought vibrant wildlife to the city, including 35 species of fish, beavers, chipmunks, foxes, owls, hawks, and a variety of songbirds. You'll cross the creek five times over small bridges as you follow its winding path through the park, past the zoo, and to the spot of a restored 1780's wheat mill and barn. Terrain: the ride is mostly rolling over gentle hills along wide bike paths. The 2.5 mile middle section, however, provides some fun and challenging climbs up twisting, shady roads. Numerous picnic areas along the climb provide ample rest if necessary. This route is mostly along paths and removed from traffic. This is a popular Washington area ride so be prepared for weekend crowds.
