Aside from being ideal for cycling with its almost traffic-free and wooded backroads, Delaware's Sussex County has a fascinating ecology. Two of the ponds this ride passes-Trap and Trussum-represent the northernmost extent of the bald cypress trees growing out of the water in swamps for which the Deep South is famous. Trussum Pond feels more like the Louisiana bayou than a corner of the Mid-Atlantic. Trap pond is in a state park offering picnic tables, rest rooms and overnight camping (call Delaware Division of Parks: 302-736-4702). Terrain: flat. Traffic is light except on Rte. 54 and crossing Rte. 13.
