On the roads around Blue Ball, the automobile is not king. In fact, it's probably number three in popularity, behind the horse and buggy and the bicycle. As you ride on these roads, you're likely to find more bikes than you'll see anywhere outside of China. The area has a large Mennonite population. Although Mennonites do have cars, they regard them primarily as utilitarian transport vehicles; so they often choose a bike over a car for a reasonably short trip. This ride doesn't have any attractions that draw thousands of visitors along the way. What it offers is an opportunity to ride with minimal interference from cars. There's probably not a spot on this ride where you can't see at least one farm. If you ride on a summer morning, you'll find entire families working in the fields. The father may be on the tractor, while the mother and children pick crops, pull weeds, or put plants into the ground. Early in the ride there is a covered bridge. If you've never ridden through one, be cautious. They're narrow and dark. Don't enter if there's vehicle coming in the other direction. The road surface is fair, several rough spots.
