One of the great benefits of converting abandoned rail lines to trails is the preservation of a piece of our history. The route followed by the Ottawa-Carleton Trailway is that of the long-forgotten Canadian Central Railway, which opened officially on September 15, 1870. Railways were the superhighways of their era and to have a railway connection meant prosperity for a community, connecting it to the larger world and turning it into a commercial hub. Some of the industries still active today in Carleton Place located there partly because of its rail connection.
