During World War II, York Redoubt was one of the most important elements in the Halifax defence system. Today, it has become a quiet location for a picnic or a short walk. Every ship entering and leaving Halifax must pass through the narrow channel between York Redoubt and McNabs Island. From the gun emplacements, 55 m/yd above the waterline, this offers an unrivalled view of all the military and civilian traffic moving in and out of this busy port.
