The Short Line, running between Oxford and Pictou, was a portion of the dream railway planned by Sir Sanford Fleming to connect the manufacturing centres of central Canada with the harbour of Louisbourg. The full line was never completed, but this section of operating track was opened in the 1890s. Abandoned by CN in the 1980s, the property was acquired by the province in 1997 and, since then, community groups have been working to develop it as a recreational trail. It has been informally used as such for many years, especially near communities such as Tatamagouche and Pictou. This path is easy walking, but with few views until you reach the bridge. During the summer, there is little shade, so make certain you carry plenty of water.
