In 1889, the Nova Scotia Central Railway offered service between Bridgewater and Middleton, which continued until the line was abandoned by Canadian National in 1984. Since that time, snowmobilers and ATV riders have increasingly used this corridor. Although the walk from Nictaux Falls as far as Alpena Rapids is fairly long, this is a relatively easy hike and many people should be able to complete it. The most difficult portion is at the start, so the return will be much less challenging. The section climbing the Nictaux River is extremely attractive. Erosion has carved a deep valley through the Ordovician slate bedrock of the South Mountain Foothills. The granite of the South Mountain Rolling Plain, which you will find around Alpena Rapids, is much more resistant to weathering. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
