Numerous waterfalls. I was there during a rainy period and the falls were flowing heavily. Trail climbs to remote, isolated mine above 11,400 feet. The trail begins near site of Pittsburg, an old silver mining camp that serviced the Pittsburg, Augusta, Black Queen and Excelsior mines from 1881 to 1896. Nothing remains of the town, but private residences dot the area. Please avoid all private drives. After crossing the Slate river, the trail turns northwest and follows Poverty Gulch along a creek with gorgeous waterfalls. After 2 miles, you turn south away from Poverty Gulch and begin a steep, rough climb through Baxter Basin that ends at a mine. During the summer, this is high-altitude grazing land. I waited several times for a stubborn bull to move aside. On the way down, take side trip left after creek crossing at Waypoint 02. The trail follows along a series of waterfalls but abruptly ends where the road to private Augusta Mine is washed away.
