As you climb along the road, notice the black soot marks at various points. Imagine what it was like to ride a train carrying heavy ore down this mountain. Take note of the vertical rock walls, called the “Palisades,” built over a century ago and still intact. Think about the 200 people who lived in Woodstock and Sherrod Loop and the 13 people, including Mrs. Doyle and her six children, who died in a Woodstock avalanche in 1884. Is is hard to believe that it took 10,000 men 18 months to build this 1,771-ft. tunnel. Take time to read all the historic signs along the route and inside the Alpine Station.
