A critical portion of the Hemlock and Canadice Lake watershed is owned, managed and controlled by the city of Rochester. The city owns all property adjacent to the shores of these lakes. The entirely undeveloped shorelines are unique among all the Finger Lakes, often evoking comparison to the Adirondacks. Both lakes are drinking water supply reservoirs for parts of Monroe County. The watershed has been designated as part of New York State's Important Bird Area (IBA) program. These watersheds meet a number of IBA criteria including: Support an exceptional diversity of bird species, Contain habitat that is rare, threatened or unusual, Exceptionally representative of natural or near-natural habitat, Support long-term research and/or monitoring Brochures describing the IBA are available at the kiosk at the north end of Hemlock Lake. These two Finger Lakes offer a pristine environment for nature observation and birdwatching. Birds Likely Seen: Variety of ducks, variety of geese, numerous shore birds, herons, eagles, hawks, finches, bluebirds, variety of warblers, tanagers, woodpeckers, nuthatches, titmice, chickadees, and thrushes.
