During the last ice age a glacier a mile thick that went as far south as the Pennsylvania border covered this area. Mendon Ponds Park is a National Natural Landmark because of its glacial landforms such as: Kettles - When a large piece of ice breaks off from a glacier, the water from the glacier deposits gravel and debris around the large block. Then the block melts and leaves a big hole in the ground filled with water. Devil's Bathtub is a good example of this. Kames - When rivers flow on top of a glacier they spill over and deposit soil into big piles. Eskers - When a river flows under a glacier it deposits material in the tunnel beds. When the ice melts a ridge of the deposits remain. Birds Likely Seen: Chickadees, nuthatches, brown creepers, titmice, warblers and finches.
