Buckhorn Island is an 895-acre parcel of meadow, woods and marsh separated from Grand Island by Burnt Ship Creek and Woods Creek. The Long Trail that leads along the Niagara River provides good views of the river and other shoreline features. In December 1996, the Niagara River corridor was officially designated an Important Bird Area (IBA). What makes this area special is that 19 of the world's 45 gull species overwinter here. It is also a good place to see rafts of diving ducks and get an occasional glimpse of the harlequin duck. Birds Likely Seen: Gulls, ducks, geese, woodpeckers, nuthatches, herons, and chickadees.
