Taos Ski Valley is 18 mi from the town of Taos and 2,000 ft higher, in Carson National Forest, where the sage and piñon of the desert give way to the tall pines of the mountains. To get here, you drive through flat desert scrubland and up a slash of a valley called the Rio Grande Gorge. The resort is the offspring of the late Ernie Blake, a native of Switzerland, who scratched and clawed to make his dream of a European-style alpine village and ski mountain into a reality. The high mountain hamlet contrasts strikingly with the centuries-old desert community; the towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains—including Mt. Wheeler, New Mexico’s highest peak—at 13,161 ft, yield to the flat sun-scorched earth of the New Mexican plateau. It is this quality of majesty and mystery that draws you back to Taos. This chapter contains a thorough description of the resort including how to get there, mountain statistics, trail profiles, lodging, dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
