On the short side, but far from easy, this ride features almost 2,000 feet of climbing and one of the most technical trail segments in the state. The route outlined here is a version of a popular local ride, with a little extra length and difficulty tacked on just to make things more interesting. Most local riders access the Hogback from the Matthews/Winters trailhead on the other side of the ridge. We’ll start from the east side of the formation, from a parking lot that is, for the time being, a bit quieter and more user-friendly. This also adds one more good climb and a few miles to the route. I’m no super sleuth, but I’d guess the Zorro Trail that starts this ride is named for the big Z it makes on the hillside, as if some 900-foot Zorro had awarded himself a victory over the earth. The Zorro Trail is a gently sloped, moderately rugged intro to the area.
