Occupying a strategic location at the entrance to New York’s harbor, Fort Wadsworth was extremely important to the defense of the nation for many years. Today, most people drive right by—or over—the former military base, which now sits in the enormous shadow of the Verrazano Bridge. The campground here is miniscule, but the views from the overlook are some of the best in the city. Seven small sites are divided by split rail fencing and include a fire ring, a picnic table, and a 30-foot by 16-foot tent pad. Site 1 was built according to guidelines set out in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In the summer, campers can fish from the beach, launch a kayak, walk on the nearby boardwalk, or join a ranger-led tour of the park’s batteries and fortifications. Alcohol and pets are not permitted at Fort Wadsworth. Up the road on Hyland Boulevard, visit the home and see the work of one of the country’s first female photographers at the Alice Austen House.
