This short trek offers excellent views of St. Mary Lake and concludes with a stunning waterfall. It is a self-guiding nature trail with pamphlets available at the beginning of the trail. The hike begins by dipping to reach a fork in the trail. Bear left on a spur path to make the short climb to Sun Point, which overlooks St. Mary Lake. A sign points out the names of the massive summits that ring the lake. These summits have a reddish cast because they are composed of Grinnell argillite, a mudstone that is rich in iron and turns red as the iron oxidizes. During the uplift that created the Rocky Mountains some sixty-five million years ago, these old seafloor sediments were tilted skyward, and the direction of the tilt can be seen today in the slant of the rock strata.
