This hike is a good wildlife viewing opportunity. You may see bighorn sheep, deer, and other wildlife in the vicinity of La Madre Spring, which has been improved to provide a better source of water for wildlife. Walk up the Rocky Gap Road, an unsigned jeep road that begins at the end of the pavement. Just after crossing the wash, turn right at an unsigned fork. A more interesting way to reach this junction is to walk up the wash to the south of the road. After the fork, stay on the main road, which stays left (west) of the wash. Numerous unsigned roads branch off on either side. The road ends at a small dam, and a footpath leads up the creek to the spring. Bighorn sheep and other wildlife rely on the water from this spring. This is also a good place to observe bighorn sheep, in season. You’ll have the best chance of seeing bighorn sheep, as well as other wildlife, if you remain quiet while hiking.
