This hike climbs past a spring to a scenic meadow in the Manzano Mountains. This is an especially fine hike in fall when the bigtooth maples are blazing with yellow, orange, and red leaves. The meadows along the crest offer stunning views. From the trailhead, follow the Crimson Maple Trail around the west side of the campground, and then stay left on the main Fourth of July Trail, which heads west up the canyon. A spur trail goes sharply right; stay left and continue west past Upper Fourth of July Spring to the junction with the Albuquerque Trail. Stay left and follow Fourth of July Trail as it swings south though a saddle, heads a drainage, and ends at the Peno Blanco Trail.
