A short walk to a cave containing one of the most important archaeological sites in North America. Controversy swirls around the ages of some of the artifacts, which may be as old as 35,000 years. From the trailhead, the Sandia Cave Trail climbs slightly as it traverses along the east wall of Las Huertas Canyon to reach the cave. Sandia Cave was first excavated in 1935, and artifacts were soon discovered that clearly belonged to the Folsom Culture, about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
