This hike along the western foothills of the Sandia Mountains takes you to the ruins of an old ranger station, which harks back to the early days of the US Forest Service, when Albuquerque was still a distant city and rangers patrolled the forest backcountry on horseback. It’s a good sunrise or sunset hike during the hot months and enjoyable any time of day the rest of the year. This short but pleasant hike follows the Tramway Trail north from the trailhead. The trail skirts just east of private land; please obey signs and stay on the trail. Just after the Rozamiento Trail joins from the left, watch for the ruins of Jaral Cabin below the Tramway Trail to the west. The cabin was used as a ranger station and was probably built by the Civilian Conservation Corps sometime in the 1930s.
