This is a great hike in a historic setting near the mouth of the St. Johns River. As with other islands of the First Coast, what came to be known as Fort George Island was once occupied by the Timucuan Indians. They got their sustenance from the nearby estuaries, and left large shell mounds as evidence of their time here. Make a loop on the grounds of an old club, now a superlative natural getaway with a sea view, hills, lush woods, and the unique opportunity to walk portions of a former golf course now being reclaimed by Mother Nature.
