This trek travels through a protected swath of lower Black Creek. Here, make a double loop in hilly terrain, passing sensitive seepage slopes and making Black Creek, where you can enjoy views of the waterway from an oak bluff. The final part of the hike passes two ravine observation points, allowing a good look into this increasingly rare natural community. We are fortunate that St. Johns River Water Management decided to purchase and preserve this scenic tract just outside of Middleburg. Here, Black Creek is making a major bend around steep sandhills. Drainages cut ravines in the sandhills leading to Black Creek. Elevations range from 90 feet at its highest point to 5 feet above sea level at Black Creek. The draining of the high sandhills has created deep wooded ravines and seepage slopes, which are uncommon communities and thus are protected by the conservation area.
