This excellent day hike—with backpacking possibilities— explores the hills, woods, and streams of Jennings State Forest. First, travel along and across Sweetwater Branch before reaching the brooding North Fork Black Creek and a campsite. Your return trip takes you over rolling terrain and through pine flatwoods. Hikers making this loop early or late in the day stand a good chance of seeing wildlife. This hike has a lot to offer, starting at the trailhead with its attractive picnic area, picnic shelter, and restrooms, perched on the eastern edge of the 23,000-acre Jennings State Forest. From there, hike to the lush centerpiece of the preserve—North Fork Black Creek, where a campsite awaits. Your return route travels through high pinelands where a sense of remoteness is very real. Be aware that hunting is allowed in the forest, so check ahead of time for hunt dates.
