This lengthy trek travels the heart of Ralph E. Simmons State Forest, making a side trip to White Sand Landing, on the banks of the scenic St. Mary’s River. Leave the river, passing through myriad natural communities, which increase your chances for seeing wildlife. Backpackers take note that two backcountry campsites lie along the route. This is the longest hike in this guidebook. It offers a chance to not only test your physical skills but also to explore the remote heart of the Ralph E. Simmons State Forest, and perhaps to see wildlife scattered amid the numerous plant ecosystems in the St. Mary’s River valley near the Georgia border. The loop, known as the White Trail, is marked with white diamond blazes as it joins and loses old forest roads.
