This hike explores one of the newer trail destinations in the Tallahassee area. Take the Nemours Trail to reach an area of habitat restoration. A side trip leads to Double Springs, a clear vent of water with an adjacent picnic area. Backtrack to the Nemours Hiking Trail and complete the loop, shaded by deep woods. Since this is a state forest, please check hunting season dates via the Web before making your trek. The proximity of Wakulla State Forest to world-renowned Wakulla Spring is one of the reasons for the state forest’s existence. The nearly 5,000-acre tract lies just north of Wakulla Spring. The state of Florida determined that acquiring the land would both help protect the spring and help restore the tract’s natural forest ecosystems, including the animals. It could also provide sustainable timber harvesting and offer outdoor recreation, including trails for visitors to explore. The forest was acquired in the early 2000s using monies from the Florida Forever program. On this hike you will see ongoing habitat restoration.
