This loop hike originates at historic Wakulla Springs and Wakulla Springs Lodge, worthy destinations in their own right. Leave the lodge to explore bottomland woods and a smaller magnitude upwelling, Sally Ward Spring. From there the circuit passes cypress-gum swamps and other Big Bend forest ecosystems. Simply stated, Wakulla Spring is one of the largest single-vent springs on the planet, emitting more than 250 million gallons of water a day! This Florida treasure lies within Wakulla Springs State Park, as do the trails you will hike here. However, Wakulla Spring draws its water from well beyond the park boundary—from much of the Big Bend, including Tallahassee. The springs have lured visitors for centuries, from Florida’s aboriginals to today’s tourists, who float its waters in glass-bottom boats or swim and canoe in its outflow.
