This hike explores a remote area of the Apalachicola National Forest. Bradwell Bay is known for its swamp hiking, but this Florida Trail trek stays mostly dry as it crosses a palmetto prairie before entering pines, finally reaching a tributary of Monkey Creek at a place known as The Oaks. Bradwell Bay Wilderness is 25,000 acres of open pinelands, palmetto prairies, titi thickets, and some of the deepest swamps around, where old-growth trees patiently wait out the seasons. This wilderness is home to black bears—you may see their acorn-laden scat on the path. Black bears have made a serious comeback in the Apalachicola and other Florida forests. Bradwell Bay—sometimes stark, sometimes stunning—was first established as a federally designated wilderness in 1975 and was expanded in 1984.
