Stretched along the lower slopes of Jobs Peak in the Carson River valley, this superlative singletrack meanders from highland desert scrub into shady montane forest and back again. The route begins among big sage, bitterbrush, and desert peach, with great views in all directions. The Sandy Trail is aptly named, but the incline is gentle, so the hiking is easy, if exposed and potentially hot. Pass the doggie waste station, the California National Historic Trail marker (part of the route used by emigrants to California’s fabled gold country), and the California/Nevada state border as you climb, staying left (southwest) at junctions with the Jobs Peak Ranch Trail. A bench in the shade of a massive Jeffrey pine, on the verge of the transition from high desert to montane environments, sports incredible views across the Carson River valley and up the mountain front.
