A 37-mile-long paved and gravel road that climbs into the lush high country of the Mogollon Mountains. This road winds through the highest mountains in southwestern New Mexico, ending at a small mountain lake. Except where it crosses a few small inholdings of private land, the entire route lies within the enormous 3.3-million-acre Gila National Forest. It climbs rapidly from grasslands dotted with piƱon pine and juniper to mountain slopes blanketed with dense forests of Douglas-fir and aspen. The Gila National Forest encompasses a vast area of mountain highlands north of Silver City. Large Tertiary-age volcanoes ejected huge quantities of lava and ash, building a large area of interconnected mountain ranges, including the Black, Mogollon, Pinos Altos, Diablo, Tularosa, and other ranges. Of these, the Mogollon range is highest, reaching its peak at almost 11,000 feet at Whitewater Baldy. The area is very lightly inhabited. Believe it or not, the village of Glenwood is one of the biggest settlements in Catron County. Special attractions: Snow Lake, ghost town of Mogollon, Gila Wilderness, Gila National Forest, hiking, camping, scenic views, fishing, and fall color.
