A 78-mile paved highway through sandstone bluffs, natural arches, lava flows, and high plains. The route traverses one of the least populated sections of New Mexico. Once you leave the highway, the traffic dries up and the rugged land and vast sky dominate. Tall sandstone cliffs, jagged lava flows, and high grassland alternate along the route, which follows a narrow corridor between lava flows to the west and Cebollita Mesa and Mesa Negra to the east. It also passes through segments of El Malpais National Monument and El Malpais National Conservation Area. The areas were recently designated to recognize and protect the unique terrain. Special attractions: El Malpais National Monument, El Malpais National Conservation Area, La Ventana Arch, Cebolla Wilderness, Continental Divide, hiking, and camping. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
