A 33-mile round-trip through tended pasture, wet prairie, and dry savannah. The region is a former Seminole and Miccosukee Indian stronghold, and the park contains the site of a former U.S. military outpost during the Second Seminole War. The drive ends at 5,030-acre Lake Kissimmee State Park, nearly surrounded by three lakes and famous for its resident bald eagles. It is the only major park to celebrate Florida’s cow hunter history and continuing cattle industry. This is a rural route through pine flatlands and wet and dry prairie that shelters abundant wildlife, including federally listed threatened bald eagles. Special features: Lake Kissimmee State Park, Florida National Scenic Trail, observation tower overlooking Kissimmee Prairie, birding, fishing, boating. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
