This 41.5-mile drive begins just outside an 1840s island seaport where naturalist John Muir ended his noted 1,000-mile walk to the Gulf of Mexico. The drive then takes a remote back route through a national wildlife refuge of pine uplands, river wetlands, and coastal marsh. It travels the back roads to a state preserve of clear, fish-laden waters, where ancient cypress trees grow tall and manatees usually return in winter to float in warm springs near the historic Suwannee River. Special features: Cedar Key Historic District, Cedar Key Historical Society Museum, Cedar Key State Museum, Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge, Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, Shell Mound Archaeological Site, River Trail, Fowler’s Bluff, Manatee Springs State Park, birding, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, beachcombing, crabbing, biking. This chapter is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
