A 20-mile drive through rolling hills of farmland, horse pastures, and hardwood forest leading from a sinkhole you can climb into to the country retreat of High Springs, a former railroad village. This drive begins at the Devil’s Millhopper sinkhole—located in a quiet northwestern Gainesville neighborhood of shops, homes, and small woods. Tourists have climbed down into its earthy, damp interior since the 1880s. A long weekend in Gainesville is a recommended side trip, mentioned at the end of this drive. The drive continues northwest out of town through a well-preserved woodland, crossing rolling farmland, wetlands, and uplands. The drive ends in a charming former railroad village, a popular base from which to explore area springs and rivers. The sites along this drive beg participation—walking, canoeing, swimming, snorkeling, and diving (if you are certified). Special features: Devil’s Millhopper State Geological Site, San Felasco Hammock State Preserve, Alachua antiques district, High Springs Train Depot Museum and antiques district, Santa Fe River, hiking, biking, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, picnicking, birding.
