This 35-mile northern Florida drive celebrates Florida’s eclectic folk culture at the Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center, and tours a region of country roads that wind through pastures and woods by the steep banks of the Suwannee River. The area is popular with campers, hikers, bicyclists, and canoeists. This drive visits a region sometimes called the Original Florida, both for what it has—woodlands and pastures, hills, winding rivers with rapids and steep riverbanks—and for what it lacks—coastline, condominiums, and hectic development. The whitewater rapids on the Suwannee River at Big Shoals State Recreation Area add to the impression that you are in the Carolina mountains, not Florida. The drive takes a short trip down the road to a park dedicated to Florida folk culture, nestled on the Suwannee River. The rest of the drive is a rural ramble to a state park and campground on a different, but equally stunning, stretch of the river. Special features: Big Shoals State Recreation Area, Suwannee River Canoe Trail, two segments of the Florida National Scenic Trail, Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center, Suwannee River, Suwannee River State Park, Withlacoochee River, swimming, canoeing, hiking, fishing, and bicycling.
