This out-of-the-way trip is a 10-mile meander through red hills in the far northwest of Florida. The drive rolls through the longleaf pine–wiregrass habitat that Florida shares with neighboring Alabama. It also crosses and recrosses a winding woodland river. Few visitors to Florida see its largest state forest or one of its most famous rivers. These treasures are tucked away in the far northwestern corner of the Panhandle, just a few miles from Alabama. But for those visiting northern Florida who can take a trip farther northwest, this drive offers excellent canoeing opportunities including the chance to glide where river otter fish, and to visit a longleaf pine and wiregrass ecosystem that shelters turkey, bobcat, eastern bluebird, and red-cockaded woodpecker. Special features include Blackwater River State Forest, Blackwater River State Park, Blackwater River and Canoe Trail, canoeing, tubing, swimming, freshwater fishing, hiking, camping.
