This 22-mile paved and gravel road, a National Forest Scenic Byway, climbs from Georgetown over scenic 11,669-foot Guanella Pass to Grant in the Front Range. The Guanella Pass scenic drive traverses the Front Range, passing abandoned silver mines, sweeping across swatches of alpine tundra littered with wildflowers and willow thickets, dropping down broad glaciated valleys and abrupt canyons, and exploring the range’s geologic history. The Front Range, the Rocky Mountains’ easternmost range, forms a lofty escarpment that soars over the rolling plains from Canon City into Wyoming. This long, twisting spine, including part of the Continental Divide, is formed by ancient granite, gneiss, and schist rocks that were once the roots of another mountain range over a billion years ago. Repeated faulting, folding, heat, pressure, a final uplifting during the Laramide Orogeny some sixty million years ago, and a final excavation by recent glaciers sculpted the range into its present shape. Special attractions: Pike National Forest, Arapaho National Forest, Georgetown National Historic District, Mount Evans Wilderness Area, hiking, backpacking, camping, fishing, scenic views, cross-country skiing, historic sites, and aspen colors.
