A 64-mile-long open loop drive that follows Phantom Canyon and Shelf roads through precipitous canyons on the south slope of Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak, towering to 14,110 feet, anchors the southern Front Range and forms a distinctive landmark for travelers. Abrupt canyons slice into its bedrock southern slopes, forming deep defiles separated by high, forested ridges. This rugged country remains one of the Front Range’s wildest and least-accessible landscapes. It’s a bold, sculpted land overlooked by pink granite bastions and inhabited by bighorn sheep, mountain lions, falcons, and rattlesnakes along the creek. This sixty-four-mile-long scenic drive makes an open loop between Canon City and Cripple Creek on two narrow gravel roads—Shelf Road and Phantom Canyon Road—that thread through precipitous canyons on Pikes Peak’s southern slope. Special attractions: Indian Springs Trace Fossil Site, Beaver Creek Wilderness Study Area, Cripple Creek and Victor National Historic Districts, Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, Window Rock, The Shelf, Shelf Road Climbing Area, Garden Park Fossil Area, Red Canon Park, Canon City attractions, hiking, rock climbing, camping, fishing, wildlife, mine ruins, and photography.
