Paved road for the first 11 miles to Petersville; improved gravel road with many potholes for remaining 17 miles. The Petersville Road is one of the last old mining roads in Alaska, accessing the Cache Creek mining district, a forgotten and remote backwater in the southern tail of the Alaska Range. The original trail into the Cache Creek goldfields followed an interior route north through the foothills from the Yentna River, while the current Petersville Road was pioneered as a trail in 1917 and ultimately upgraded. Road conditions can be quite variable due to steep dropoffs, sharp curves, and man-eating potholes. Vehicles with trailers and RVs should avoid this route, and a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. The road begins as a smooth ribbon of asphalt running through the bottomland forests of the Susitna River Valley. After 3 miles it becomes rough and potholed, wandering among clearings bearing old homesteads and the lush and impenetrable forests that dominate the floodplain. An abundance of ferns and a mantle of old-man’s beard, a moss-like lichen that lives on tree trunks and branches, display the moist conditions found in this area. There are a few scattered lodgings on the way to Moose Creek, where the cabins fall away and the road enters the primeval Alaskan wilderness.
