Winding gravel highway that runs 160 miles (258 kilometers) from Alaska Highway to Eagle, Alaska. This highway runs through the forested domes of the Alaskan interior, passing through the Fortymile gold fields. It follows the route of the old Eagle-Valdez Telegraph Trail, surveyed in part by Lieutenant Billy Mitchell, who was later to become the father of the U.S. Air Force. This area is a mecca for canoeists as it features the Fortymile National Wild and Scenic River and Yukon-Charley National Preserve. About halfway to Eagle, the Taylor Highway joins the Top of the World Highway, which leads to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. There are steep and narrow sections beyond this point, so large RVs and vehicles pulling trailers should not attempt to proceed northward from this junction. The road reaches a dead end on the banks of the Yukon River, where the town of Eagle is one of the most authentic Alaskan frontier settlements that you can reach by road. The highway is open from March to October and is not maintained during the winter. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
