Gravel road from Dawson City, Yukon Territory, to a junction with Taylor Highway in Alaska; 127 kilometers (79 miles). This highway climbs through the high country west of Dawson City, providing an alternate route into Alaska. It follows the route of an old pack trail that once connected Dawson City with the gold-bearing streams around the Sixtymile River. Eventually, the trail was improved and became known as Ridge Road. Most of the road traverses alpine country, offering expansive views in all directions. It is narrow and winding in sections, and guardrails are rare. It is also prone to potholes and washboards, especially after wet weather. Drivers of large RVs or vehicles towing trailers might want to avoid this road. It is not plowed in winter and effectively closes with the first heavy snow. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
