A 13.4-mile highway that winds from high desert up to the 10,678-foot summit of forested Sandia Mountain. The Sandia Crest Road climbs 3,760 feet on the east side of the Sandia Mountains, offering cool mountain temperatures, wide views to the west, and plenty of opportunities to picnic and hike. The two-lane highway is paved and has frequent turnouts for scenic and recreational access. Traffic on weekends and holidays can be quite constant, but it is relatively light on weekdays. Special attractions: Cool temperatures, thick forest, colorful autumn foliage, far-ranging views, hiking, and skiing.
