A 205-mile mostly paved two-lane loop through scenic river valleys, along the Black Canyon’s northern rim, and across two beautiful mountain passes. The West Elk Loop Scenic Byway traverses rural western Colorado, offering a little bit of everything: views along canyon rims, raging rivers, scenic river valleys, forest and desert landscapes. The two-lane road is paved, except for the gravel County Road 12 that is closed by snow during the winter. Traffic is fairly busy during the summer between Crested Butte and Gunnison, and light elsewhere. The loop provides frequent scenic turnouts. Special attractions: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument; Needle Rock, Dillon Pinnacles; West Elk, Maroon Bells–Snowmass and Ragged wilderness areas; Curecanti National Recreation Area; historic mining and railroad sites; fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, hunting, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
