A 52-mile paved route climbs from the semiarid lowlands of western Colorado through pastoral orchards to the evergreen forests of the Grand Mesa, the world’s largest flat-topped mountain. A 12-mile gravel spur route leads off the main byway to a 270-degree view of the Grand Valley and western Colorado. The Grand Mesa Scenic Byway traverses its majestic namesake high above the Gunnison, Uncompahgre, and Grand valleys. The main route is a two-lane paved road with frequent turnouts for recreational and scenic stops. Traffic is moderate, with varying speeds. The spur, Lands End Road, is a well-maintained gravel road open from the end of June to the first snowfall. The road climbs more than 6,000 feet and provides magnificent vistas of alpine forests, lakes, streams, and mountains. Special attractions: Cedaredge Welcome Center, Pioneer Town Museum, Grand Mesa Visitor Center, Lands End Visitor Center, Uncompahgre Plateau, Powderhorn Ski Area, hiking, fishing, camping, downhill and cross-country skiing, wildlife viewing, hunting, horseback riding, biking, and boating. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.
