A 54-mile winding highway atop the crest of the Ouachita Mountains. The Talimena Scenic Byway crosses the Ouachita Mountains, the highest range between the Appalachians and the Rockies. The byway route varies in elevation from 1,150 to 2,681 feet as it travels the crest of Rich Mountain and Winding Stair Mountain. The two-lane highway is paved and has frequent turnouts for scenic and recreational access. There are some steep grades and sharp curves. Special attractions: Robert S. Kerr Memorial Arboretum and Nature Center, Queen Wilhelmina State Park and Lodge, historical sites, far-ranging views, camping.
