This hiking loop travels through a 1,111-acre tract that protects the uppermost part of the Brooker Creek watershed, where ample wetlands combine with upland areas to form numerous habitats that merge and meld in an eye-pleasing trailside medley. The preserve is approximately 60 percent wetland and thus is an important aquifer recharge area. summer season, but I don’t recommend hiking here during that time. Being mostly wetlands has its upside—it is a chance to explore many different plant communities, from deep cypress swamps to moist grassy margins where pitcher plants can be found to upland areas such as pine flatwoods Brooker Creekand oak hammocks. The area, purchased in the 1990s, is still undergoing habitat restoration. A practiced eye can see the linear row cropping from its days as a pine or orange plantation.
