A local favorite past a famous cascade, then over a bald peak and across an open ridge. The Moats are a long ridge that runs along the west side of North Conway, paralleling the Saco River. There are three Moat peaks—North, Middle, and South. Hiking across the Moats over all three peaks requires a car drop; but if you hike just North Moat and descend via the Red Ridge Trail, you get the same mileage and many excellent views without the need for two cars. North Moat is the highest of the three at 3,196 feet. Though it is not particularly high by White Mountain standards, it feels high because its summit is bare due to a forest fire many years ago. The views keep coming as you descend along Red Ridge, which takes you along the top of White Horse Ledge and Cathedral Ledge, two famous cliffs that are a mecca for rock climbers.
