The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail was named for former Alaska governor Tony Knowles, who served from 1981 to 1987. One of three greenbelt trails located in Anchorage, the trail connects the north part of downtown to Kincaid Park in the south. The multipurpose trail engages various users including cyclists, hikers, dog walkers, runners, and winter skiers and is a crowded trail, particularly during the summer months. The trail spans 11.0 miles one-way and provides extraordinary views of downtown Anchorage, the Chugach Mountains, Denali (Mount McKinley), Mount Susitna (Sleeping Lady), and Fire Island. You are also very likely to encounter moose on the trail. The entire trail is paved and mostly easy, other than the last mile, which has a steady hill to climb as you approach Kincaid Park.
