This historical gold-rush route once connected the miners of Circle City to the supply post of Fairbanks. Today the rugged trail is accessible at several points along the Steese Highway and creates attractive easy day hikes. Some of the most scenic portions stretch through the high alpine tundra of the Twelvemile Wayside area. In the late 1800s this route linked the supply post of Fairbanks to Circle City and the booming Circle Mining District. The Fairbanks–Circle Historical Trail was somewhat short lived and was replaced by the Steese Highway in the 1920s. The Circle Mining District, however, remains active both commercially and recreationally and has produced over a million ounces of gold. There are several sections of the trail that can make an easy day hike.
