The Powerline Trail follows the highlights of hiking at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The 1.7-mile trail slopes away from the university’s Large Animal Research Station through a spruce forest into the grassy meadows at the heart of the campus. Intersecting trails connect side-trips to the Exotic Tree Plantation, Potato Field, and Smith Lake Wildlife Preserve. You’ll find this hike across Yankovich Road from the university’s Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station (LARS). The Arctic Institute of Biology, students, and scientists study many large arctic creatures including reindeer, moose, and musk oxen at the station.
